The setting evokes the imperial world surrounding the exile narratives of Scripture, where kings such as Nebuchadnezzar and Darius ruled from fortified palaces and public gates served as places of judgment, administration, and royal decree.

The image connects especially with the language of Daniel, who was elevated in Babylon and “sat in the gate of the king” after God revealed wisdom beyond the power of the empire’s magicians.
