Aaron stands before a row of wooden staffs, lifting the one rod that has miraculously sprouted leaves and blossoms. The scene portrays the sign given by the Lord in the wilderness after the staffs of Israel’s tribal leaders were placed before Him. Aaron’s budding rod identifies the priestly line chosen by God, settling the dispute over spiritual authority and confirming the ministry of the house of Levi.
