The Ephesian theater fills with an agitated crowd as raised fists and shouting faces press toward a civic platform. A robed official stretches out his hands to quiet the assembly, while guarded men stand nearby under the stone arches of the public arena. The composition portrays the uproar recorded in Acts 19, when Demetrius and the craftsmen stirred the city against the spread of the gospel because Paul’s preaching threatened the trade in shrines of Artemis. The scene emphasizes the collision between idolatry, commerce, civic fear, and the message of Christ. In the biblical account, the town clerk calms the mob and dismisses the gathering, showing how God preserved Paul’s companions and restrained violence even amid public opposition to “the Way.”
