Jesus stands bound and scourged, crowned with thorns and clothed at the waist, while Pontius Pilate faces Him beside a basin of water. The Roman governor’s open hands and the prepared wash basin point to the Passion narrative, where Pilate presents Christ to the crowd with the words, “Behold the man,” then attempts to distance himself from the sentence of crucifixion by washing his hands. The contrast is stark: the wounded Messiah remains silent in suffering, while earthly authority hesitates before divine innocence.
