Isaac, aged and blind, reaches out to touch the arms and shoulders of the son standing before him, while the disguised Jacob receives the patriarchal blessing meant for Esau. The quiver of arrows and hunter’s gear identify the deception surrounding Esau’s identity, while Isaac’s searching hands recall the tense moment when he says, “The voice is Jacob’s voice, but the hands are the hands of Esau.” Set within the intimate space of a patriarchal tent, the artwork portrays one of Genesis’ most consequential family conflicts: inheritance, covenant promise, human scheming, and divine sovereignty intertwined. The scene is ideal for teaching on Genesis 27, the birthright, sibling rivalry, deception, and the unfolding covenant line through Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.
