Jeremiah the prophet stands in the darkness of a stone cistern, reaching toward the rope lowered from above for his rescue. At the rim, Ebed-melech bends down in urgent mercy, extending help into the pit where Jeremiah had been left to die. The circular well, rough stones, and deep shadow emphasize the prophet’s abandonment, while the rope becomes a visible sign of deliverance. The scene comes from Jeremiah 38:6-13, when officials cast Jeremiah into a muddy cistern for speaking the word of the Lord, and Ebed-melech courageously appealed to the king to save him. The passage honors faithful intercession, compassion toward the persecuted, and God’s preservation of His messenger through the obedience of a righteous servant.
